Orbital Engine company in Western Australia seemed to come up with a way. the technology was used in Peugeot (iirc) scooters and in a range of other prototypes.

Dodge did it too. I think it was the Neon prototype.

It met emissions. With direct injection 2 stroke engines can meet emissions. The problem was the
Orbital could only have 2 of these 3 at one time
met emissions, good fuel consumption, or
good NVH.
